Need some help with gf's computer
 

Hey guys, my gf has been having problems with her computer. When it started a black screen would come up saying "windows could not start because the file is missing or corrupt: <windows root>\system32\ ntoskrnl.exe". I tried going into recovery but when i would try to copy the files back I would get errors. So i tried reformatting and after the reformat was completed i get this message on a black screen: "missing file <windows root>\system32\hal.dll." Any help would be appreciated thanks.

I googled "hal.dll" and the first thing that came up was this "Windows XP Setup - Missing HAL.DLL". I didn't lool through the entire thing but it might work for you.

when you reformat using a bootdisk, make sure to format the master boot record.

the command is 'fdisk /mbr'

short life spans though...they die after 7 days of straight hacking

if all else fails for trying to replace the file, do a cold reformat through dos, make sure you have a boot disk though, youll have to do a fresh reload unless you have a backup or recovery. need anything more PM me
