Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has asked militant group Hamas to form a new government after its apparent election victory.

The shock result - still to be confirmed - has left the Middle East in turmoil.

The radical group has insisted it will not negotiate with Israel, while Israel and the US refuse to deal with Hamas until it renounces violence.

Ruling party Fatah had been expected to win the Palestinians' first parliamentary elections in a decade.

Official results are expected later today but the Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qurei and his cabinet have already resigned.

Sky News Middle East correspondent Emma Hurd said Hamas had expected to gain opposition seats, not take power.

As he quit, Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qurei said: "This is the choice of the people. It should be respected."

But Fatah said it would not be forging a political alliance with its rivals.

Hamas is considered a terrorist organisation by the US, and the group has carried out dozens of suicide bombings in Israel.

Israel has repeatedly asked Mr Abbas to force Hamas and other militant groups to disarm.

But Mr Abbas refused, warning such an act could cause civil war.

Hamas' looming victory would not automatically unseat Mr Abbas but he might resign if it stops him pursuing a peace policy.

Reason the group formed in the first place was because of oppression from the jews, its just another fine lesson in the middle east of history coming into the present. Some intellects actually say this is a good thing for the peace talks, also in this article it says they won't negotiate with Israel...they will, they said they will. I Guess they took back their old remarks of wanting to wipe Israel off the map.

yea your right on that, but at the same time they are not the kind of government that will become Israels good chummy neighbour.

The only way the palestinian-israeli situation will ever be fixed is if both sides, meaning not just the leaders, but the people as well, get their heads out of their asses and start working towards peace. fat chance that will happen tho. IMO, this does not help it one bit.

I see no future for this conflict.

I see a lot of future for the conflict because Hamas's leaders will continue to send their young into Israel to blow themselves up in a futile attempt to make Israel give up their land and lives.

let me get this straight. You see no possibility for conflict, with two societies that have been at odds for decades, both attacking each other, both losing lives? And now, a terrorist organization has taken control of one of them. NOTE, this is not a group deemed a terrorist organization solely by Israel, the United States, as well as the European Union recognize Hamas as a terrorist group. This is the equivelant of having somebody from Iraq's insurgency run, and come out victorious.

What could possibly go wrong?

looks bad, especially after both sides have said they are not going to deal with eachother. dumb move on our part, but Hamas wasnt too far behind. maybe a deal can be made with sharon out of the picture, but it will all be on Hamas to make it happen. Israel did have a hand in starting this shit, but thats already in the past (establishing Israel). the middle east has to accept the fact that this country will remain there and isnt going away. this doesnt look good, especiallly with the Iran problem looming in the background.

I meant that their was no hope regarding a peaceful outcome, thought that was pretty clear..

Hamas has promised to build schools and hospitals. Governments in the area haven't done that, nor ahve they provided funds to keep existing faciilities open or even to pay workers. This is why people vote for Hamas.

Not to mention this now gives Israel pretty much the justification to attack palestine whenever they want beacuse there is essentially a terrorist organization as government.

-First, President Bush will take a hardline stance on this issue, Put down your weapons, crap like that ect.

-Second, Palestine will refuse, The demands will be to harsh.

-Then we have more conflict, more suicide bombs.

-Why ? The US arm's industry will get a bonus from this, the attacks will lead to increased Israeli spending on the military.

This whole dispute between Palestine and Israel is like that of the bloods and crips, they are fighting over turf and when one side is attacked the other will attack back. This is a perfect example of gang-style mentality in government.

It makes me sick how immature and religiously intolerant that part of the world is.
