Chernobyl Nuclear Disaster Anniversary

[quote:84509]On April 25th -26th, 1986 the World's worst nuclear power accident occurred at Chernobyl in the former USSR (now Ukraine). The Chernobyl nuclear power plant located 80 miles north of Kiev had 4 reactors and whilst testing reactor number 4 numerous safety procedures were disregarded. At 1:23am the chain reaction in the reactor became out of control creating explosions and a fireball which blew off the reactor's heavy steel and concrete lid.

The Chernobyl accident killed more than 30 people immediately, and as a result of the high radiation levels in the surrounding 20-mile radius, 135,00 people had to be evacuated.[/quote:84509]

I love reading about Chernobyl.

Theories on the IAEA covering it up to make nuclear energy, in the future, seem a better alternative.

Coleman 04-25-2006 11:06 PM

yep, i've learned a lot about it in a few courses I've taken this year: Engineering Disasters seminar, safety science, energy and the environment.

It really is pretty interesting. The design of the nuclear reactor was kinda weird though...the whole thing was external hwere the water touched the fuel rods.

This is the accident that the Soviets tried to cover up, right?

[quote="Cool Fool":0d6df]This is the accident that the Soviets tried to cover up, right?[/quote:0d6df]they didn't make it public pretty much. The air flow took a bunch of the radiation northwest towards Finland and stuff.

Machette 04-26-2006 11:04 AM

I really can't say I'm sure but the guy wrote a report in 1992 saying it moved east..I'm no expert so I'm not going to say its the truth, but it is interesting. But the soviets covered Chernobyl up really good and the IAEA, now, is helping cover it up even more.

The photo of the dome covering the plant and the word she used to describe it as the "sarcophagus" is eerie.

Unknown_Sniper 04-26-2006 04:45 PM

yup thats the site. IT would be awesome to ride around a city like that without anyone else being there.

Machette 04-26-2006 04:56 PM

While inhailing radiation.
