It gets really interesting the further down you go. It has to do with artificial reefs and old naval ships.

Call me a douche, but, why exactly do we need artificial reefs?

because the real reefs are disintegrating.

Because we're killing all the natural ones, and aside from the benefit that the organisms that live in coral reefs provide to the ocean in general, some people just like keeping species alive.
