Gerv help
Posted in other forums to no avail. Hoping one of you guys here can help in identifying my problem.
Spent the better part of yesterday searching the net for a fix to no avail. Since updating my eMachine 6805 lappy to SP2, it won't shutdown. I rarely go online with it hence the reason for the delay in upgrading the OS Anyway, got frustrated and reformatted. No problems shutting down but as soon as i upgraded to SP2, it won't shutdown. It gets stuck on the "Windows is saving your settings". I didn't install any software or external hardware (using the touchpad) so the system is bare. Any clues as to whats the problem? So far, i disabled: "use the welcome screen" and "use fast user switching". Tried to shutdown in Safe Mode....no go Laptop will restart without any hiccups, it just won't shutdown For those who know the laptop, the BIOS version = 0F02.P00 |
you could try XP-AntiSpy , [url:7e53f]http://www.softpedia.com/get/Internet/Popup-Ad-Spyware-Blockers/XPAntispy.shtml[/url:7e53f]
use the fast shutdown, im guessing some windows program is not shuting down |
I'm very skeptical but i'll try it anyway since the last resort for me is uninstalling SP2. I already disabled alot of "windows features" including Automatic Updates. I'll post back in a few to let you know it didn't work.

Nice little utility but didn't fix my shutdown woes. Thanks anyway......gave me something to do.

this is a common issue here at school with the public computers. but probably for both similar and different reasons. Differences being user settings are stored off-site, not on the computer. Same because the page files are large due to everything that needs to be done to load them and to load certain utilities everytime. Check the size of your user profile and page file settings. It might just take a while the first time and by while i mean 30+ min.

Ark there are a lot of reasons this can happen bu it is more than likely a conflict between sp2 and software/hardware on the laptop
Try this link for ideas: http://aumha.org/win5/a/shtdwnxp.htm |

EDIT: Poked around in system properties, user profile size is listed as 870KB. |

Thanks Scorp......was at that site yesterday trying different things. I realize there can be a thousand reasons as to why i'm having a problem but....at least you guys are giving some suggestions.
Keep 'em coming. If by the end of the day i'm still having problems, i'm going to uninstall SP2. |

Right click my computer>properties>advanced and on the user profile part click on settings. You should have the size of the profile listed there. To check swap file size Do the same but click on settings and then advanced on the performance section and look at the virtual memoery part. beer: |
Scorp,
User profile size is listed as 870KB Virtual memory is listed at 768 MB Are these values within reason? |
ya
another thing you might want to try is running and installing all or as many security and bug fixes as you can in one wack then restart. Also, ill see what I can dig up and post later Edit: Just found this. maybe it will work. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... laylang=en |
Well, after alot of trial and error, i finally got it to shutdown. I ended up flashing the BIOS and updating the Processor, sound, and video drivers. It took some time to research what drivers i needed and what BIOS version i needed.
The BIOS update date from eMachines got me confused since it was from 12/04. I thought i was using that version but apparently i wasn't. I guess thats the last BIOS update from them. Had to save it incase they stop linking it. Thanks to all for the help. What a pain in the ass to troubleshoot problems. It always ends up being something dumb but, doesn't everything? |
Fuck of all fucks !!
I'm over here all happy installing some shit and whamo....fucking thing locked up and won't even boot in safe mode now. ffs, this happened while installing ZoneAlarm so now i'm starting again from scratch. Fuck me man, fuck me !! EDIT: Fucking weird. That was some hardcore fault that happened and i was able to "repair" it with the WinXP disc. If something like that happens again, i'm gonna wipe it clean and start over. /me goes back to installing shit....yay |
