My computer problem.....

Ok here is a challenging one for everybody that helped out meatgrinder ...

I just bought another 256 mg ram chip and installed it ... there are three
mem slots on my motherboard ... not sure of the brand but the chipset is via ... all the slots are now full with pny 256 sdram 7.5 nanosecond ... all three of the chip are the same brand / 7.5 ect...

the problem im having is random errors in vcache / windows me ... most of the time i get the error message when either moving large amounts of files .. from one dir to another, or burning a cd ... other times they are just random ... i had this problem before when i had a 128 chip in slot one .. and two, and a 256 in three ... it seems that anytime i put a chip in slot three i start having this problem .. ??? Same thing now ... i added the new chip to slot 3 and the random errors have started up again ... always the same error ... vcache vxd something ... and sometimes it goes to the windows exception screen ..

I would like to keep this memory ... help me rudedog biggrin:

buy a new comp. You will have to sell all your lawnmowers to buy a new one

have you in fact verified that your mb supports that much ram? also, certain vidcards used with WinME along with 512 + of ram have known issues and flake out the os. i know this does not solve your problem, just a few ideas for ya to look into. Good luck J.

Windows ME, 9x cannot handle more than 512MB of memory.

And here are the three suggested workarounds:

"1. Physically remove any memory in excess of 512MB [!]

"2. Use the System Configuration utility to limit the amount of memory that Windows uses to 512MB or less.

"3. Use the MaxFileCache setting in the System.ini file to reduce the maximum amount of memory that Vcache uses to 512MB (524,288 KB) or less."

Midget Killer is correct, judas. You should consider upgrading to win98se, win2k or winXP

I recommend XP, Drop me a line. this way you can keep the ran you just purchased as many games and other programs ( photoshop7) will take advantage of it.

98se has the same restrictions. Upgrading to an NT based OS or *nix will be the best choice.

Thats the problem, just as everyone said. I went on a huge benchmark spree on 98SE, I stole 1.5GB of RAM from different computers I have, didnt work. :\
