Blair Says 'Action Will Follow' if Iraq Spurns U.N.
 

BLACKPOOL, England (Reuters) - British Prime Minister Tony Blair warned Iraq Tuesday that "action will follow" if it ignored international demands to disarm and let United Nations weapons inspectors back into the country.

Describing President Saddam Hussein ( news - web sites) as an international outlaw, Blair said unless the world faced up to what he said was the threat from Baghdad, it would sooner or later "erupt and engulf us."

"Let it be clear that he must be disarmed," Blair said in a speech to trade unionists at their annual congress.

"Let it be clear that there can be no more conditions, no more games, no more prevaricating, no more undermining of the U.N.'s authority," he added. "And let it be clear that should the will of the U.N. be ignored, action will follow."

"Diplomacy is vital. But when dealing with dictators -- and none in the world is worse than Saddam -- diplomacy has to be backed by the certain knowledge in the dictator's mind that behind the diplomacy is the possibility of force being used."

Pressure for parliament to be recalled from its summer recess grew Tuesday when a member of Blair's own Labor Party launched an almost unheard-of bid to hire the House of Commons for a debate on the subject in the absence of a formal recall.

Blair, who met President Bush Saturday, has been the staunchest international supporter of Washington's plans for possible military action against Saddam. Bush wants Saddam removed from power.

I can agree with this. Yesterday Canada's Prime Minister said that he thinks that Bush should go through the UN first. Bush is at the UN on Thursday. They should give saddam an ultimatium. Lay out guidelines for him to follow and if they are boken there will be punishment. This way war is avoided until it is a last resort. Through the time that the UN is in Iraq, intel can be gathered and a case against Saddam can be made to the world. If it is found that he needs to go, then fine. If not and he obeys the UN's wishes then there should be no war.

saddam will probably say something like "ohh we let inspectors back in" then turn the plane back like he did in '98 or whenever it was, and the U.N. will do nothing except break for lunch.

And then thats when the rest of the world comes in to kick his ass.

I'm in agreement with the UN findings. Thats the way this thing should be handled. If he breaks the UN agreement, war is to follow.

This will be a long process....I'm eager to see how Sadaam treats the ultimatum.

Problem is he already broke the UN agreements back in '91, so we already have grounds for war.

No that is not grounds for war.

Why are you so anxious to get rid of this guy? Sure hes got a bad rep but there is no proof. Just like in the justice system he is innocent untilproven guilty. The gulf war was a totally different situation. He invaded a country hes not doing that now. No grounds for war. Breaking UN agreements doesn't deserve war. Do you know what his reason is? No. Are you a high level govt' official? No. Breaking the agreements and making weapons of mass destruction is grounds for war however.

Just because the guy is a dick etc. does not mean you can invade his country. Ya know what, hes in power of his own country. Who are you yto tell him to leave? Why does the US have this power that lingers over every country. If they don't like you, they'll get rid of you themselves. It shouldn't be this way. If there is proof of what he is doing, fine. Invade. Kill him and replace the govt with somone else. Until it is proven and made public that he doing things that threaten the lives of people outside his country and it is reasonable to assume that he is GOING to use them against another force, then invade.
