• Drawing upon the film "Making Sense of the Sixties: In a Dark Time", in a substantive paragraph, discuss how the protestors of the 1960s are similar to and/or different from the current anti-war protestors.

2.[10 pts.] On pp. 255-259, the author discusses liberty, paying special attention to John Stuart Mill. Presently, Mill's analysis of "self-regarding" and "other-regarding" behavior may be useful in analyzing controversies surrounding these three topics: prostitution, sodomy laws, and drug use. Drawing upon your understanding of Mill, select one of these three controversies, and complete the following tasks: a) In a substantive paragraph, explain how your selected controversial behavior could be considered "self-regarding behavior;" b) In a substantive paragraph, explain how that same behavior could be considered "other-regarding behavior."

Drawing upon this discussion, complete the following tasks: a) In a substantive paragraph, describe two reasons why the Market is attractive; b) Find an article that illustrates one of the selected attractions, and in a brief paragraph, explain how it does so; c) In a substantive paragraph, describe two failures of the Market; d) Find an article that illustrates one of the selected failures, and in a brief paragraph, explain how it does so. ** Attach the 1st page of each selected article to the back of your paper. **

Drawing upon your understanding of work (your own work place, family and friends that you know and observe, etc.), complete the following tasks: a)In a substantive paragraph, select someone that you believe does receive a "fair wage", and provide two reasons for your example; b)In a substantive paragraph, select someone that you believe does not receive a "fair wage", and provide two reasons for your example.

Drawing upon this discussion, complete the following tasks: a) In a substantive paragraph, select a tradition that is common to many members of a society, and explain to what extent you support or oppose continuing that tradition; b) In a substantive paragraph, select a reform that many Americans are calling for, and explain to what extent you support or oppose continuing that reform; c) In a substantive paragraph, summarize both what you consider to be the best reason to support a revolution, and the best reason to oppose a revolution.

7.[20 pts./5 pts. each] The War in Iraq has dominated the news for the past several months. Arguably, it may be the most historic event in the next fifty years. Accordingly, it deserves special attention and analysis. Drawing upon the massive amount of press coverage assigned to this war, complete the following tasks:

In chapters 2-12, the author examines thirty-three political concepts. You need to select four concepts, and complete the following tasks for each selected concept. ** You cannot choose more than one concept from any one chapter. For example, you cannot write on both "power" and "authority", since both are included in chapter five. **

TASK: For each selected concept, find an article related to the War in Iraq, and, in a substantive paragraph, first briefly summarize the book's definition of the concept, and then explain how the article clearly pertains to the concept. **Be certain to attach the 1st page of each article to the back of your paper.** In sum, you will need to write four paragraphs, on four concepts, using four articles. To assist you, I have provided a news link for the Washington Post. Check the external links folder in BLACKBOARD, and open the folder that says "2nd Paper." You are not required to use this source, however!!

Your grade will be based upon the following criteria:
__ Meeting the Wednesday, April 30,2003, 4:00 p.m. deadline.** You may turn this paper in anytime prior to the deadline. Drop the paper off by sliding it under my office door (Brown 319). Do not leave it with the faculty secretary, or Evening Services.
