The Q3 engine was solid and a whole generation of games were written on it. Most of the new games using it have a very heavily modified version. For COD they claim it was almost rewritten from the ground up.

But it has run its course. The UT engine will start getting more use and when HL2 and Doom3 eventually make it out, those engines will add to the scene.
