Ok ,
1st. Why do we park on a driveway and drive on a parkway?
Driveway- 1871-A private road giving access from public way to a building or abutting grounds.
Parkway -1887-A broad landscaped throughfare.
You can see both words pre date automobiles. To "park" was not a term that would describe where you would leave your horses or means of transportation in the late 1800s.
2nd.Hamburger:
The hamburger, or "Hamburg steak", as it was once called, gets its name from the city of Hamburg in Germany. At first, the name meant only "ground beef". By the 1930's in the U.S.A., hamburger was also a word for the sandwich. Remember that the hamburger was not named after ham.
3rd.Rhode Island:
Historically the state was named after the Indian word for the area " Roode Eylandt" which means Red Island. There is also a rumor it was named for the Greek Island of Rhodes because of the shape.
