I thought to "put your foot in your mouth" was to blow it/contradict
yourself/compromise yourself/give away too much information etc

Rumsfeld did that too, before 9-11 he said that big aircraft carriers like the USS Nimitz class are outdated and practically useless and we need small carriers for "regional conflicts", shortly thereafter the military sent 3 large carriers to Afghanistan rolleyes:
