You really should do that, uninstall
all previous nVidia drivers etc., switch off virus scan and install the new ones.
I used to just install the new ones over the top and never noticed much improvement, but I did the above
when I installed 53.03 divers and the improvement is great! (I'm such a bo0n oOo: )
got a P4 2.4 with a GeForceFX5600 and can run everthing maxed* out at 1280x1024 res. (CoD, Vice City, Mafia etc.)
*well maybe not some of the high-end anti-aliasing options etc.
