relatives' home in Tripoli, added to the mystery.
News reports in Lebanon said that members of the extended Hassoun
clan had opened fire on the corporal's relatives, accusing them of being
American collaborators. Two people died and three were wounded but
they were not members of the clan, witnesses and officials said.
Tripoli is a stronghold of Sunni fundamentalists, and anti-American
feelings have been running high in the Middle East.
When he was reached by telephone, Sami Hassoun, the marine's older
brother, said: "We have an emergency here," and hung up. Local reports
said some of the 1000-odd clan members had blocked the street with vehicles.
The Lebanese Government, which last weekend confirmed reports
that Corporal Hassoun had been killed, refused to comment."
