[quote="Short Hand":8e54d] i hate to say it but any amps juicing out more then 500 watts rms in a heat sink design with out any ventilation such as fans is gonna over heat. or at least give in a little, which happens to mine rarely.
what was the price on that amp aswell. Ill compare it to the price i put on mine.[/quote:8e54d]
Ok let me start out with this: I know ALOT more about car audio than you.
Next, you are so incredibly wrong! First off, do you know the classes of amps and what they mean? Probly not, I'll explain.
Class A - Not many out there, US Amps and TRU makes some IIRC. Extremely inefficient meaning they waste alot of power to heat, but they sound amazing. They are more prevelent in home audio.
Class B - Very efficient but sound like azz, little to none are sold as car audio amps.
Class A/B - ahh, here we go. These are 95% of you multi-channel amps out there. If your amp has more than 1 channel, its a class A/B amp. These are, as the name implies, a compromise between class A and class B. They are somewhat efficient (around 50%) and can sound pretty decent.
Class D - If you have a true monoblock amp, it is probly a class D. These amps are very efficient (up to 80%) meaning LITTLE heat and lots of power. Thats why they are usually used in high power applications. They dont sound good, but thats why we put them on subs where they arent noticably bad. They have recently come out with some full range class D (or class T as they are being called) which they have managed to get to sound pretty good.
The point of that is with a class D amp, you can have a 1200watt amp and it wont overheat nomatter how hard you drive it or how hot is it outside. Not all of course, some do overheat but saying all amps over 500RMS overheat is plain stupid. I've owned 3 amps over that and none of them have ever overheated. Kenwood amps suck ass, thats why your dads overheated. Rockfords are decent. What model? If its a class D monoblock like you said, I'm surprised it is shutting down. You are running 0 guage power and ground right?
BTW my eclipse was $350 locally.
