handguns can be used for hunting, I do it . I use a .40 cal for bunnies and a .44 mag for bambi. I prefer the bow and arrow but guns work fine. So called assault rifles are a blast to shoot, shooting is a fun past time. try it!
As for the question about the cost of ammo, the SKS 0r AK47 both take 7.62x39 and they cost about $100 for 1000 rounds
