Well, I've never seen a gun within the city, nor heard/seen one fired, and I live right in the middle of Auckland city, by far the biggest in the country....I guess that about sums it up.
I have however seen a persons head split by a shovel, which was thoroughly unpleasant.
The unit is for counter-terrorism. I personally think it's just a move by the government to actively demonstrate (under pressure from countries like the U.S) support for the "war" on terror, by funding a special unit. It's pretty darn easy to get in the country, being an island. We've already snapped some Israeli spies, and suspected terrorists without this unit, I just think it's cool to have another special forces group like our current inglorious bastards, the NZSAS....
