RAM is the easiest piece of hardware to install, you just pop it in. But don't do it if you've never installed anything before, because RAM is very delicate, and you could screw up other components in your PC as well. The hard drive problem could be a software issue. If you have a RESTORE program from say Mcafee or Norton then that could be doing it. I had a problem at work where like 8 GB was taken up because of the RESTORE keys in my registry, so I had to delete them all. Who needs RESTORE anyways? it's really not worth it, just back up your system. To remove it though you need to edit the registry and it is complicated to say the least, it took me like 2 hours to fix the problem.
If you need any more help let me know, you can check in the C: for the RESTORE folder, although it may be hidden.
