As for something like anxiety, its hard to prevent or stop while its happening. Yes you can take meds, but that leads to a state of apathy and stoicism. I damn near had a heart attack once for no reason at while having an anxiety attack. Out of character i called my best friend's mom at 12am (who is a nurse) about my chest problems. She thought i was dying, but then put 2 and 2 together and figured it was just an anxiety problem. The next morning i woke up to go to the nurses office on campus and she told me not 1 thing was wrong with me.

I'm sure people with problems such as insanity don't have the reasoning to go to the hospital because they believe its normal. Or they are just so good at being insane they can hide it when they are alone.
