well thanks for your help anyway rudedog. ive left a query with my ISP as to whether they block specific ports but considering they allow and type of server to be hosted i think its unlikely.
i think its time to hit google and troll through the gazillion international forum posts for this.
if i was using a router i would be ok becuase ive helped other people do setup port forwarding for a lot of different routers.... also considered this when buying my modem since i had no real use for NAT.
