We have shitloads of "street gangs" in Auckland...

Most of them are jokes, generally the more they "represent" the less dangerous they actually are. The most dangerous ones are the quiet gangs...i.e gang of somalis who chased me with chains and poles because I walked through the local primary school by myself...
We have "Black Power" which is a maori gang, the "Mongrel Mob" which originated as a biker gang and a series of other gangs that were originally biker gangs....Thats pretty much our organised crime, the police often turn a blind eye because the reality is they don't tend to fuck with people who aren't gang affiliated and most of their crimes could be considered victimless, drug dealing etc

I've heard of some of these gangs stopping to help people change tyres on their cars on the side of the road...They're typically quite affable persons, but if you cross them you'll get a sawn-off up your ass or have your kneecaps and elbows bashed to shit.

Then there are the less dangerous street gangs which are filled with the NZ version of chavs and wiggers....Most of them just talk alot of shit, and are most of the time high school age - but there is the odd gang that wanders a certain set of streets that you have to be careful of....

After leaving high school and all the parties I can't say I've encountered many, it seems to be a high school thing.
