I see. Well, I guess I'll have a small word here. Jay-Z isn't really about Hip-Hop. He's more about Hip-Hop/Pop. He's an entertainer now, and has nothing really good to rap about. His songs are pretty catchy most of the time. But, I don't think there's much wrong with that. I mean, most popular musical genres have 'real' artists, and they have their entertainer type of artists. People want to be entertained as well, and I don't really see something wrong with that.

I'm sick of the way people overrate popular rap. The only reason its popular is because the record label execs sell the IMAGE. The music is NOTHING special, by any means. The majority of these guys that listen to it haven't even heard of half of the good stuff out there that is ACTUALLY good.
I know so many people that say they're rap listeners, their favourite artists either Nas, Jay-Z, 50 cent etc, and yet I can't have a conversation about rap with them because they've never heard of any of the artists I listen too. They generally end up liking it because its so much more accesible than the bullshit pop rap which is confined to one subject matter which is criminal/violent/testerone/money fuelled rap.
Pop hiphop has been dominated by this same boring subject for about a decade now, and its fucking jumped the shark, its boring, unoriginal and needs a kick in the ass to get going without this played out image - Its gone on so far past its use-by date that its becoming less and less like actual music and more and more like wrestling. All this dissing, all this hating shit - Its all just a ploy to sell records, Jay-Z vs Nas was just a glorified Hollywood Hogan Vs Someotherpencilneckedgeek with a soundtrack, and all these people buy into it and go on and on about the quality of the music, and how awesome it is.
If 50% of the non-pop rap guys were given a chance they would sell just as well, if not far better, because the same guys I talk to that hate rap and just dont like it, are the same guys that get into alt/underground/backpacker rap or whatever you want to call it.
The state of rap at the moment is unlike any genre...Its like a fucking conspiracy. I'm sick of turning on the radio, the tv, going to stores and hearing this shit, and not hearing ONE good song out of the millions that there are out there. I'm also sick of the general public not even knowing about an entire genre of music that is overshadowed simply be the refusel of, god knows who, to accept SUB-GENRES in rap. Rock accepts them. Jazz accepts them. Every other genre has recognized sub-genres...But hiphop is hiphop, and rap is hiphop.
....And so apparently Jay-Z is the same kind of music as Jurassic 5? Or the same kind of music as Five Deez? Or People Under The Stairs? Or MF Doom? That's like saying The Beatles are the same as Cannibal Corpse. It has no other name accept RAP/HIPHOP. So you're to assume the ones that are the most popular are the best in the genre. So basically Jay-Z is the best in rap? Ridiculous. Absolute fucking bullshit.
