yes, we had those on our jerseys back in highschool. And its NOT that simple, if the player turns into it last second, its not a penalty because its his fault and the checker cant do anything about it. im not going to keep arguing this because i KNOW im right, ive been playing hockey for years, captain for much them so i got to talk to alot of referees when the coach is blowing up over a non call... any ref will tell you this is not a penalty.
I never had those useless things but I've seen other teams wearing them. It's just drilled into your head from day one not to hit people from behind.

And it's not a penalty if the puck holder turns at the last second when he's aware (you should always be aware of a hit coming if you've had the puck for more than 4 seconds) of a check coming.
