Default PIRATE GETS 180 MILLION RESTITUTION VERDICT - 06-30-2003, 04:01 PM

[url=http://tv.yahoo.com/news/ap/20030627/105677256000.html:538c5]Pirateers Beward[/url:538c5]

This bloke is fucked. That's it. As soon as he gets out of jail, he's going to be paying 500 dollars a month out of his paycheck from this mystery job that hes going to hope he gets. More than likely he's not going to get shit. He'll be paying this debt for 30,000 years, so of course this was more a "example" sentence than anything else. But still, this sets a nice little precedent since the figure of 180 million is based on the revenue the satellite companies would have lost if his scheme to sell 5000 users free cable went through. What this could mean for "content" providers (movie studios, music companies) is that damages can be determined based on the amount of revenue lost based on what has been downloaded from you. So those FTP's and mIRC folks who have had 100's of GIGABYTES downloaded from them could be looking at hefty ass penalties if this piracy hunt gets that far.

But bottom line. . .180 million. God damn.

Why? $500 a month. If the guy lived to be 90, its still less than half a million. Thats just a car payment for live. And $500 will be peanuts in 10 years.

What I want to know is how the cops came up with their estimate of $180 million. Lets assume the cards will work for 2 years (and anyone that has ever been involved in satelite hacks know this is a VERY generous overestimate). And the guy had 5000 customers. Thats $3000 a month per customer. No one can watch that much satelite, even if they wanted to. They used the highest shock value number they could and I bet they could only thinly justify the number. Kind of like when they make a big drug bust and value small plants of brown dirtweed a $1000 a tree. No street credibility.
