Default KFOR/UN - 03-24-2005, 12:46 PM

Hm.. as of tomorrow, Ive got exactly eight months left of my military service in Sweden. However, Ive got the chance to apply for the Swedish KFOR/UN forces, and join them once im done here. The thing is, would it be worth it? I mean, I would love to keep the uniform on and actually make a difference, if ever so small, out in the world. BUT, I dont know if its worth missing out on so much back here in Sweden. Whats your opinions on this? Would you even consider going to a country far away just b/c you want to help? Discuss please.

Well, Im more than overwhelmed that I got the opportunity to, but being a UN-soldier isnt exactly serving my country. Its more like serving the world...

I would say do it if you want too. You may miss things, but think of all you will gain-the knowledge and experience. I would do it (and I am).

It's your life mate, just don't forget that all your pals will be back in Sweden laying helga in her lederhosen & listening to hardcore techno whilst sippin smirnoff. Right at that time you will be manning a checkpoint in the middle of Kazakhstan.

This is precisely why I decided to stay in the reserve & not join the regular forces, once you sign your life away for 12 years or whatever then thats it, you no longer have the choice of what to do or where to go.

Where would you end up?

I think Europe is still in Bosnia, I know that Canada pulled out of Bosnia this year I believe. I think we're on our last roto. I know a lot of guys who have been with KFOR in Bosnia. I also know 2 guys who were in the Medak pocket where some major genoicde went on and a major gun battle broke out. You're not in danger of that anymore. All the people i've talked to who have gone to Bosnia recently say its boring.

The other place is Astan. I don't know anyone personally whose been to astan, so I couldn't tell ya.

Well, theres Bosnia, Kosovo (KFOR = NATO Kosovo Forces), Balkan, Congo, Liberia, Eritrea/Ethiopia, Sudan, Sierra Leone, East Timor, Georgia, Afghanistan, Kashmir, Korea and the Middle East. Atleast thats the countries Sweden is "active" in atm.
