Default Lancaster - 08-18-2006, 08:55 PM

I just got back from taking a trip down to Lancaster, Pennsylvania. We went to this HUGE buffet place. It was literally 2 or 3 times as big as those Old Country Buffet chains and had reallllllllly good food. I almost threw up from eating so much.

Then we went out shopping at some local place. They had a barn for the Amish to park their horse and buggy to shop. I think the store was owned/run by Amish people since 90% of the workers were Amish and spoke German from the sound of it.

I think it is nice that they live and don't bother anyone, yet it is wrong that they try to dupe the children into staying with their religion. They stop teaching kids after homeschooling till the 6th grade and don't teach any geography for the hope that they won't understand what the outside world has to offer. That's a bit odd to me.

I was looking at the one section where they sold Amish suits for men...they looked pretty leet actually ha. The suits were going for about $290 with an under vest. Their hats ran for around $35.

ps- The Amish aren't kept in the dark about everything. At age 16 the Amish are allowed to live an "English" lifestyle. (they still consider us English hehe) This period in their life is called "Rumspringa' which is Pennsylvania dutch for "devils playground" During this time in their life they get to drive cars, use electronics and go to movies. Stuff that we usually do. Rumspringa can last for as long as they want. And by the time when its over they are given 2 choices. Live an "English" lifestyle or join the Amish church. The Amish are baptized later on in their life. When they are old enough to decided whether or not the Amish church is the right decision for them. This is contrary to contemporary Christianity, where the person is baptized shortly after birth. To join the Amish church or to live amongst the "English". Its a difficult choice for any Amish to make.
Also the reason that they stop schooling after 6th grade is because every Amish boy and girl is needed for yard work and time with the family. The Amish value family bonds over schooling.
And why do i know all this? Well i have some secrets about me calmdown:

Actually it is German. For some reason it's called Dutch now but it used to be Pennsylvania Deutsch.
