Needed something for a modern art class I am taking and whipped this up today, figured I'd post it here for the flames.

Is it based off of Greg Martin's tuts?

A lot of what I've learned is from tutorials, but I took what I've learned over the years in photoshop and used it for this piece.

I will post the numerous psd's I have when I get home so you guys can see how I did it. I basically used 3 layers for the star field, and used various blending options to get them to come out the way they did. One layer was for the brighter stars, one for the smaller ones. I just created a random pattern of noise and then erased what I didn't need. Then by changing the contrast and levels I got the base star field.

Then I used various airbrush sizes set at anywhere between 20-35 opacity to create the gas fields. I used the same texture I used for the planet actually, and when I was satisfied I changed all of the levels to match the blue scheme. The lense flares where 108mm, set at a low brightness and then I used the levels again to match the blues. That was pretty much it for the stars, although it did take a while to finish.

The planet was made up from the circle marquee tool. I created a perfect circle on top of a black base layer. Using blending I created 3 different layers, one for the atmosphere and one for the texture. Inner and outter blur was used for the atmospheric glow. I used the clone tool around the textures on teh planet surface to get the look I wanted. Then I erased what I didn't want creating the shadow effect.

Oh the planet was colored with a large 200pt airbrush with 20 opacity, then filled in a little more. Gaussian blur was used before the texture was applied. Then a couple of filters where used for the chrome effect on the planet's surface.

I could go on and on, but everything is original. Nothing was copied from another picture, and it took me about 4 hours to complete without a break. I could have done more but I didn't feel like dedicating any more time to the project. Like I said I'll post whatever PSD's I have left so you guys can chek it out and mess around if you want.
