Default Web Hosting geeks help! - 03-30-2006, 10:57 PM

so Ive been doing some research into getting some new webz space to host private pics and vids of the family.

Id been with dreamhost and they are great but im not all that hot on the yearly plunk down(also lite in the pockets at the moment) to drop 120 bucks and would never use the huge increase of space every week that they offer.

So I took a look at 1&1 and they offer a 5 gig space for 2.99 a month with 1 free domain

Im looking more at the 50 gig space for 4.99 a month

both are a 6 month at a time payment so basically 30 bucks every 6 months

My question is, they offer MS hosting and Linux hosting.

what is the difference between the two?
Advantages/Disadvantages?

K thx.

Did you see the last edition of PC magazine, 1and1 place a 14 page insert in their publication, 14 fricking pages ... our sales people are bothering the shit out of them to advertise with us as well.

okay well, what server are they using? there are many Linux distros (im willing to bet RedHat 9), and are they using Windows Server 2000 or 2003? Its all about who you want, really, both MS and Linux are great operating systems. Also what is the bandwith being offered?

500 GB monthly transfer volume

also to clarify this is nothing 1337, no huge mainpages with flash animations and shit. what Id like to do is just have a directory with Pics and Vids. Click a folder and you are prompted to enter a pw, enter pw and you can view stuff.

This would be to basically share pics and vids of the baby to the wifes family back home in PA

yeah what you are thinking of right now is just fine. As for the OS, choose Windows Server 2003. It actually is a good stable NOS.

With the problem I've been having about the newspapers website, I also looked up 1and1. But I was w/ quadrahost.com before, and never had a problem ... is either 1and1 or quadrahost for me, and they are both cheap.

Nyck, unless you're doing ASP and/or MS SQL, I'd go with a linux host. IIS, the Windows web server is pretty shitty in comparison to apache and all the other open source linux web servers. Those windows systems are usually for people looking to run ASP apps or MS SQL databases. You probably don't need to do this.

I was assuming he wanted FrontPage for his web building (unless Nyck is leeb and does his own shit in a text editor and photoshop).
