On the official site, it lists gestapo officers as having a pistol, and being very deadly and a major threat. I have figured out why they are a major threat:
The gestapo officers do not carry just a pistol, They carry an mp40 machinegun.

This discovery was made thanks to the movie. After you climb the ladder and shoot a couple of guys, you happen into a bedroom that has a radio in it. When you step in, there is a Gestapo officer, and a wehrmacht soldier. Powell shoots the gestapo officer first, so you must look hard. But if you pay much attention, you can see:
He is carrying not just a pistol, but an smg, prolly mp-40!
So, why weren't we told this???

that wasn't a gestapo offier! that was just a regular wehrmacht officer. remember this is omaha beach, and the gestopo was the 'secret police', they only opperated in non'combat areas.

The hat you speak of was the M34 and M37 Schirmutze or 'peak-caps'. Any NCO (corpral to sergeant ranks) was permitted to wear the hat like this one:

this one is infantry (has white piping) and has had the leather chinstrap removed.
Officer could wear one like this:

this one is recon (yellow piping) and has the officer's wound alluminum chinstrap.

So as you can see just because someone is wearing a hat doesn't mean that they are gestopo, if they were the piping on the cap would just be orange.

yeah, i was just hoping that perhaps gestapo officers had more than a pistol . . .
Still, maybe when the game gets delayed and they are forced to start releasing videos of the other levels piece by piece to ward off the death threats, maybe we will learn more!
lol

the other services had the same basic cap with just color and insignia changes:

Luftwaffe Officer:

Luftwaffe NCO (this one has the leather chin strap):

Waffen SS Officer (rose piping for mobile artillery):

Waffen SS NCO:

so there you have it, the history lesson of the day!

Burgen, i thought the rose piping on the waffen-ss hat signified panzer, not mobile artillary.
but i could be wrong . . .

well 'rose' was for Sturmgeschutz (assault guns, basicly a tank with a gun too big for a turret) and pink was for panzers. but because so many manufacturers were out there and each one seemed to have a different deffinition of 'rose' so you may see a 'panzer' cap out there that looks like a 'Sturmgeschutz' cap, and vice-versa.
