Default Newspaper Ad - 03-02-2006, 10:15 AM

... if you are only bright enought to judge something by way of : its shit , or it sucks, please stay right the fuk out of this thread.

i was asked to redesign a newspaper ad , this one :
http://s92915907.onlinehome.us/newsad11.jpg

which appeared in my local paper. now, it is a jumbled up mess ... it shows no organization etc.

heres my redesign:
http://s92915907.onlinehome.us/newsad_v4.jpg

there are tons of things that bother me about it, the body for one. pls note : that i couldnt remove anything from it, the shitty logo at the bottom for instance and the source images i was supplied with were less than usable. all the illustrative elements had to be 300dpi so pickings were slim. most of the images where scanned one a white back so making a "good" selection so that i could use them on other backs were close to impossible. greatly limiting my design choices.

anyway, heres my question. i thought that my design was quite sophicated and organized ( obiously, there are some visual problems with it tho that i havent figured out how to fix just yet ). But it seems like most people prefer adds that resemble the original ... the corny stars , offsetting the text around the stars etc .. which in my mind is quite ugly and "tacky". I guess its a matter of taste ... how i find that original add to be "tacky", most people are accustom to seeing "tacky" adds and accept them as being "good". So, now im beginning to wonder if im going at this with "too much taste", if i am judging my own work by my own standards instead of desiging something that will be "accepted" by people who perhaps dont have the level of "taste" as i do.

Should i adjust and make ads that are more acceptable, or stick to my guns and continure to design by my own standards?
