Default Iraq Accepts New UN Resolution on Arms Inspections. - 11-13-2002, 11:38 AM

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - Iraq said on Wednesday it accepted a new U.N. Security Council resolution, which orders Baghdad to disarm, cooperate with U.N. weapons inspectors or face "serious consequences."

"I delivered a letter to the secretary-general's office," Iraq's U.N. ambassador Mohammed Aldouri told reporters. "It was a positive reply."

Aldouri described the six-page letter as setting out Baghdad's entire position on the resolution, adopted by a 15-0 vote last Friday.

"We are waiting for the inspectors to go as scheduled," Aldouri said. "We are eager to see the inspectors perform their duties in accordance with international law."

Aldouri said Baghdad has accepted the resolution in an effort to avoid war.

"This is a part of our policy that is to protect our country, to protect the nation, to protect our region also from the threat of war which is real," he said.

The letter was signed by Foreign Minister Naji Sabri.

The Security Council had given Iraq a one-week deadline to Nov. 15, to accept the resolution and promise to abide by its terms. Aldouri said his country agreed to the measure in order to avoid a U.S.-led attack.

Iraq's acceptance came as a surprise as most council members expected Baghdad to wait until Friday. The letter arrived a day after the Iraqi parliament voted unanimously to reject the resolution and its terms.

Aldouri said again his country had no weapons of mass destruction and would make that clear. Iraq next month has to give a declaration of any weapons programs or components of dangerous weapons it still may have under terms of the resolution.

An advance party of U.N. technicians is expected to go to Baghdad on Monday to prepare for inspections, not expected for another week or two.

China's deputy U.N. ambassador, Yishan Zhang, who holds this month's Security Council presidency, said the 15-member body welcomed "the correct decision of the Iraqi government."

"We want to see the resolution implemented fully and very effectively," he said.

A U.S. official, however, said, "We shouldn't make more of this than there is. This is their responsibility under the council mandate."

We'll I think your numbers are a LITTLE high, but I would'nt take this acceptance very seriously, this is Saddams little game, he has to disclose any and all weapons, if he lies (like always) well then his ass is grass.

If he accepts and everything goes well as ordered, fine.

If not then he'll be in trouble.

But I don't think until then you guys can really say hes playing a game. Just like the boy who cried wolf. Right? Chill until you get all the facts.

Well along with the acceptance note, he said "we are clean" we have no biological, no chemical, and no nuclear research program. We know he has two of the three.

I'm afraid his estimate may be accurate, my friend.
If Saddam fires missiles at isreal (liek last time, to get Arabs in his favor) Isreal said they will retaliate with nukes.
this opens the window of opportunity for Pakistan and India to exchange blows too.
then everything goes real FUBAR real fast.

Fortunaly Israel would not retaliate with nukes they may threaten this, but if they did they would lose our support, they have just finished a missle defense system. And they would face invasion from their neighbors.

Valid point.

But as long as he cooperates, theres nothing really to complain about. If they find everything and disarm then thats good.

He knows if he doesn't let them in hes gonna get the shit blown outta him. He could be playing a game...buying time. But until I see him say to inspectors, "oh no you can't go there" etc. I won't support a war and I won't think hes playing a game. hes scared because he knows bush wants him dead.

And thats what scares me. The situation is progressing positivley.

Bush first wanted to go in by himself but people told him to gather allies and go through the UN. He said OK, and numerous times he has threatened to go without the UN. Now that we have a resolution, hes still threatening war. I support war if the UN thing falls through and Saddam says no way etc. but I say lets give peace a chance. I really don't see what bushes problem is. Hes so determined to go to war. I just don't understand. If he does go to war the international community will look down on the US for sure. If he waits for the UN he has a much better chance of looking better.

you know what really annoys me, no offence, but the way Bush has dragged the UK into this mess. Some of you may now be thinking, no he hasn't it's Blair's fault, well I agree with that aswell.
Blair must be totally blind, none of the UK support him on this, and he's just digging us deeper into a hole we won't be able to get out of. Every time that he says he supports Bush and thinks Saddam is an evil bastard (which he is) , he makes the UK an even bigger target.

And the games begin....?

Sometimes Green, I think you wish for a war with Iraq. Easy to do when you won't be the one on the front lines.

Saddam certainly does have some time to clean up his weapons and hide them - if he does have them. What is it, 45 days until the inspectors come?
