I certainly won't be continuing to map. Even back last summer when I released my first and only complete moh map(s), even when the game was still fairly heavilly modded and popular, the 4-5 months I spent on my map were wasted.
Why?
It hardly got played.
It got some exposure on the old aa.com and I gather it still gets used on a few American servers out there but that's not really any use to me (Can't be arsed to play with 150 ping, makes rifle-work extremely masochistic).
I advertised it like crazy around as many fansites and ladders as I could but it didn't get used nearly as much as everyone said they would use it when I was nearing completion.
Sound bitter? A little, maybe. I enjoyed making it and I am very proud of the final product that I created (with the help of this community's feedback, of course) but it did take up a good few months of my spare time.
And the only time I've played it is once, except for on my own listen server, which is lame.
An even bigger kick in the face was that my map was downloaded less than maps like the tank one (you get to control a tank in MP, about 5 minutes fun - the actual map was poor) and just about every other half finished beta that you could name. No, no one wanted a brand new and original map, they wanted one of 2015's stock maps converted with some boxes a roof and some additional and box-like rooms with dodgy miss-aligned textures.
This all drew me to the conclusion that this community isn't interested in mods or maps and skins. Not seriously.
They get downloaded, they get removed.
I downloaded loads of maps and kept them, even though some of them were sub-standard in my eyes. I saw it as worth-while so long as the maps were playable and were being played.
Now, I have no maps in my main. Waste of disk space.
Also, what's the point in mods if you can't use them without being accused of cheating?
I was impressed by the work gone into the Eye Candy mod (except the sound, they butchered that, you cannot improve on the originals whatsoever) but the mod did make the game look fresh and new (if a little cartoony).
The problem is, what if someone asks for a screenshot on a non modded server? You're fucked.
If they don't know what the eyecandy mod is they'll think you cheat.
Blood mods? Cheats.
Skins? Cheats!
Crosshairs? Cheats! In NO other game are custom crosshairs considered a cheat!
It's a bloody farce.
Mods are a 5 second distraction, nothing more.
So, you can rest assured that this particular mug ain't going to bother with them anymore.
Ok, I feel better now. biggrin:
