You actually don't need the patch. Even with older software versions, you've just got to change a little setting. The default setup for the wheel is a little wacky so you just need to change the function of the wheel in the Logitech software.

Open up the Logitech mouse control software by double clicking the little mouse icon next to your clock (in the taskbar). If you have it hidden or disabled it from startup, you can also get to it through Control Panel. Select the "Buttons" tab. Set number 2 for 'Middle Button'. Also make sure "MS Office Compatible Scroll" is turned off. If you have Mouseware version before 9.41.2.4 (newest version), set the scroll amount to 'none.' If you have this new version setting the scroll amount doesn't matter.

The problem is that by default the wheel is always recognized by Windows no matter what you set it for. It's just that the Logitech software, by default, overrides thie standard detection with its own funky wheel driver. By setting the wheel to something else, you just get the basic Windows wheel functionality (which is just fine); this is what games need. So with the 'middle button' setting not only will your wheel will still be recognized as a normal scroll wheel, games will now recognize it too. Plus, you get the nice third button functionality so you'll be able to use the wheel 'click' (pressing it in) in Windows and games as well (I use it for reload, but you can set it to whatever you like).
