If you're lucky, they usually want actual work experience in the field which means working for a major company or at least in some type of business environment. A major percentage of IT grads do not end up doing IT work as a profession, due to the low wages and competition. The most important factor is knowing someone that can get your foot in the door. Believe me I've been through all of it and I'm only 23, it takes a lot of work to get ahead in this field.

Although I must say my goal of becoming a sys admin was met much earlier then expected, but where I'm working now is only a spring board to future employment for me. I want more money.
