Perhaps a reason I can think of is that the dude who killed Mellish was Steamboat Willie's standin, and the real guy who played Steamboat Willie wasn't available on the day of the shoot... So maybe it was Steamboat Willie who killed Mellish, but another guy was playing him... oOo:

at the end upham kills the man who just killed miller..... he kills him because he calls him "upham"...... he knows the mans name is upham because thats what the allies were calling down the stairs just before this man killed mellish...... right before he walked down the stairs and met the man they were calling "upham to.

Actually "steamboat willy" (not the man who killed mellish) most likley would have known uphams name since he would have had more than enough time to find it out when he was digging the grave under uphams supervision.
