It must have been VERY depressing sitting on frontlines in Western France....It physically would have looked like Hell. Miles and miles of mud, years of dead bodies, rats, chemicals, unexploded shells, as far as the eyes can see. I think the most painful, physically, would have been all wars pre-20th century.
