They were caught with their pants down. Most of their armour was too sparse out to actually put up any real menthod of defense. They just went around the Maginot line and attacked from the weak flanks. German military doctrine and tactics were brilliant, nobody had a way of countering the blitzkrieg. France held the Germans off alot longer than Poland did.

In less than a year after invading Poland, the axis powers invaded and occupied Norway, Denmark, Poland, France and Somoliland (along with other african territories). They've conquered continental europe (excluding the USSR) in a little over a year.
