Then I'm afraid you dont understand the Electoral system. The reason the popular vote isnt used is because it would keep politicians out of states with low populations (much of central america) and California, New York, Washington and Texas would dominate politics, as well as dominating public policy. Liberal states would just vote for amendmants that ran contrary to the wishes of smaller states. Why is this important? Because inorder to establish the federal government, states - in good faith - gave up some rights and delegated them to the feds. The electoral college is the way it SHOULD be.

Besides, Gore won by 500,000 votes, a statistical tie. Thats NOT an overwhelming mandate.
