The guy talking is the captain in the back of the boat that you can't see. The boat has 11 people in it total, with you (Powell) in the middle. The first 5 guys that try to run out and get shot, you're the first one off of the boat alive with the rest of the troops from the boat forming up around you.

Pretty much, you always make it off of the boat, it's basically an opening sequence to the level to set the mood. No we're not going to make it that historically accurate as you'd be restarting the level 49 times out of 50 to see if you'd be the one surviving . But yes, once you're in the water after that you'll have plenty of chances to get killed p.
