Grunge isn't just from the 1980s, although it did die out by about 1994. But music died in 1995 anyway.

My "definition" comes from my time in America and Canada.
But grunge isn't just a sound, its a feeling, that does sound corny, but its true; the feeling of teenage angst and bordem.
