Default Elixir Studios Closes...more to follow? - 04-28-2005, 02:40 PM

Elixir Studios today announced that it is closing down, following the cancellation of a project they were working on. The developer was responsible for Evil Genius and Republic: The Revolution and not too long ago announced Republic Dawn: The Chronicles of the Seven.

Demis Hassabis, founder and Chairman: "It has been an amazing roller-coaster ride. It's hard to believe that 7 years have flown by. I'm very proud of what all the staff at Elixir have achieved and the games we produced. We gave it everything we had but ultimately it wasn't quite enough. It seems that today's games industry no longer has room for small independent developers wanting to work on innovative and original ideas. Perhaps there is no longer any need for them. However, this was the sole purpose of setting up Elixir and something we could never compromise on by going down the licensing route."

Now you may think big deal but if you read the statement its quite refreshing that they closed due to the fact they didn't want to sell out.
They wanted to stay independant and create innovative, creative and different games, which is what ALL (should) gamers want.
I think its a shame they had to close, it makes me sick when you see all the crap thats getting pumped out more and more in the gaming industry these days.....the greed of corporations are slowly seeping into games..

Think E.A.........any thoughts? do you prefer the mainstream, boring, mass-marketed, milked til dry, made for everyone' type games? (think: FIFA, Sims, Unreal Tournament) annoy:

OR

Do you tend to buy the more creative, interesting games that some may call weird or unconventional? (think: Sacrifice, Giants, Grim Fandango)

Nothing wrong with unreal tournament dude.

But yeah id rather have interesting games, that the typical EA Games game...except when it comes to sports, NBA Live 2k4-2k5 is good.

I played Republic: The Revolution and I thought it was a great game. Yeah, having the 3d engine was kind of stupid, and the interface wasn't the easiest and there were a few bugs, but it was still a decent game. I really enjoyed it. It's too bad they had to close. I didn't even know they had a new republic game coming out. I would have bought it for sure.

agreed...most or their sports games are pretty leet..Im 73 games into my baseball season as the detroit Tigers right now and its really competive only a game up on the Indians @ 38-33. I had a streak where I lost 11 out of 12 games in that span.

I buy both. It just depends on the game, I hardly ever pay attention the the developer until I've finished the game. Most of my games tend to be from big-biz companies, though.

I just thought i'd start a topic based on this sentence he mentions:

"It seems that today's games industry no longer has room for small independent developers wanting to work on innovative and original ideas. Perhaps there is no longer any need for them."

Coming from someone from the industry, I just found this a little worrying......

Yeah that's worrying. Seems everything is going that direction nowadays, not just video games.

I have it on all star basically goes like rookie, pro, allstar, mvp

I have some modded sliders to make it alot more realistic. Top guy only has 53 rbis and 20 hrs after 78 games. I also have new rosters etc. Thats the great thing about sports games on PC...you can always get current rosters.

Isnt that the hoops game where you play one on one and your supposed to run combos on a dude like a fighting game, like bounce it off his head, pull his shorts down then jump over him dunk, and rest your nuts on his forehead?
