I believe he was thinking of the Detroit/Colorado brawl where he thinks Detriot kicked the shit out of Colorado where in reality, the fight was nearly even, even tho Detriot is a much bigger team.

Claude LePwew got his ass kicked and he needed it kicked for what he did to Draper ( a cheap cross check to the back into an open door which resulted in massive surgeries to his face) then after the fight it was a straight line to the Stanley Cup!!! It seemed like that was the motivator they needed to take them the entire way
