Actually, when I was in school, having the laptop during lectures was a lifesaver. I think it depends on the person. I type faster than I write, and having the notes digitally makes them easier to search/find later.
I haven't been in lectures where all you do is write what the professor says. In the courses I've taken, you can jot down small ideas and just look them up later and make notes that way. It engrains it in your head too since you aren't rushed later on while you write down the details. Even so, many professors put up powerpoint slides online so you can print them out and bring them to class if you choose. I guess that is more of a "larger university" characteristic rather than a small private college.
