Actually in the current version of "Popular Science" Magazine they go over what happens in the movie and tells us if what happens in the movie is possible or not. They say it's not global warming, but a sudden shutdown of the Global Ocean Conveyor, which moves heat north. Without that heat, things like what happen in the movie could occur. They say a total elapsed time of 10 years to complete the cycle. So this isn't gradual global warming.

Well, everything goes in cycles. We have known that there will be another ice age for quite a while. There WILL be another ice age, and another after that and another after that. There will be an infinite amount of ice ages as long as everything is constant. However a meitor hitting the earth would effect our weather by the dust in the air, the sun exploding would obviously have an effect, and that will happen, however I think its supposed to be a few billion years. I don't think what this movie is about is the traditional ice age, because an ice age takes thousands of years. This movie probably takes place within a few years, and 10 years is definatley not enough time for an ice age to suddenly occur. Its more of "climatic chaos" than and ice age according to Pop Sci. Anyway, I haven't seen the movie so i don't really know whats going on.

Hate to say it but if it gets too hot, the ice caps will melt, thus flooding the planet and splitting the US into two territories: the rockies and Appalachia. There wont be a midwestern USA anymore. At least, thats how I see it.
