Rumsfeld said troop levels should be down to around 66,000 by the end of 2006. It was supposed to be around there after the invasion was over. Oops. Three years later.

Iraq on brink of meltdown

Anyway, the US has royaly fucked over Iraq, it's government and its people. Their pretty much in the midst of a civil war. Nothing is going to remedy the situation. Send more troops or leave, it doesn't matter. The country is fucked for a good long time.
Iraq is Americas money pit now, that place will allways have American there. Maybe the only kind of government the people in the middle east can have is a dictatorial rule. I dont know, but I have a feeling 10 years from now we will be talking about the same subject.

In my opinion, that was the point from the very beginning.

Sixty years after World War II American troops are only now leaving Germany and Japan. The major policing force in both those countries took ten years to leave. Iraq will be a base of operations for a long time to come, but the violence will dull down within the next year or two once the Constitution is done.

I'd say the chances of that happening are slim to none, the insurgents have come this far, you think an Iraqi constitution is going to stop them now? If anything I would wager that violence would increase...

Plus once an offical government is put in, the insurgents will just have a more media rich person to go after, making there violence seen more on the tv.

I admit, it's quite idealistic and it doesn't seem as if the tide against the insurgency has turned or even bettered itself. The main thing is that the insurgents have failed to debase major operations or the planning of the new government, they simply attack American troops and seemingly random citizens which gains them less support.

Driving a truckload of C4 into a school full of children isn't any sane persons idea of government in Western Civilization or Eastern Civilization.

thats just it. They dont see that as bad. To them, they are fighting the ultimate evil, and if they some kill innocents in the process, Allah will forgive them. oOo: These people do not have a conception of, what if god doesn't exhist? And I haven't heard of the insurgency directly targeting children, after all they will make up the next generation of jihadists, wouldn't make sense to attack them.
