Adolescents typically find some applicable and relevant meaning in the subject matter and main character; in other words, it's not a book known for adult themes. Since Chapman was an adult at the time, I think it contributed to the image that he was (still is) a nutcase. It's the type of book you read and identify with at 14 or 15, but grow out of as you mature. I think a lot of people would agree with this, which makes the case of Chapman seem strange, since he claimed to always carry the book with him. Not to mention the fact that Salinger, the author, is a crazy recluse.

I think whoever tried to kill Reagan also carried the book around at all times.

In short, it’s a harmless but controversial piece of literature. That’s why it’s a big deal. Grow the fuck up and stop reading Harry Potter.

My point was I dont see why people look at poeple who have read/love the book and happen to murder someone. Theres no correlation. And I dont think Salinger is actually crazy... just really dislikes attention.
