You sign up with one of these pay-to-play sites, and then use a newsreader to scan the internets for digital media.

Its essentially a P2P file-sharing set-up, except youre the only person downloading from the other guy, and youre downloading at your ISP's maximum speed, w/o the other guy ever keeping any record of what it is your snatching. New media is available usually minutes/hours after it is dropped to the general public, and the only limit is how much you can actually leech. Many sites have free trials (Giganews for one) to show you the wonders of the Newsgroup.

So long story short:

Pros: Faster download, more security
Cons: Cost

When AOL closed down the private rooms that allowed folks to download files, this is where I turned to.
