You're looking in the wrong places.

The way I see it, rap has split into two different genres, on the one hand you've got mainstream - Totally piss-poor lyrics, really catchy hooks, but some bumping beats for people that just like the bounce in it.... I personally wouldn't call this half rap at all.

Rap to me is the other half, which directly focuses on both the emceeing aspects AND the beat. Skill in emceeing is alot more focused on in this 'other half,' theres more of a community and emcees fully recognise each other and often refer to them in raps - in most cases all races are fully accepted as well - It's also no longer "a black thing" in this half, IMO - I can list so many white acts off the top of my head whose talents are fully recognised.

The sad thing is, this half of rap isn't what the mainstream of music listeners out there prefer, but to me, those people aren't actually hiphop fans, they've just become fans of this new split off genre. So because the real rap acts don't appeal to the people that prefer the bouncing party hiphop mainstream beats, they don't get any air time on radio or television - so effectively, people that claim to hate rap (but in most cases hate what they believe to be rap - the mainstream) never get to hear these great acts unless they go searching for them.

I've directed plenty of rap-haters to good rap acts and changed their whole view of rap, its happened to many times to count. I think most people are suprised when they first hear a refreshingly non-mainstream rap act.....

Quentin Tarrantinos movies all are great. Even the ones he didnt direct. reservoir dogs, pulp fiction, true romance are all. IMO better then kill bill. And KillBill was 1337.
