Nah, it didn't, otherwise the entire point of the movie wouldn't have made any sense. The entire time the guy was trying to make people appreciate their lives. Through out the whole thing we saw adam give up on everything. He hands the photo over to the other guy. Doing this would only make him angrier and would probably make him kill him to save his family. Adam didn't care about life. When the guy from the hospital comes in and Adam bashes his face in, this shows that Adam wants to live. This is what the guy on the floor wanted to see the whole time. By turning off the lights adam could see the light on the key. If the key were to go down the drain without getting caught, what chance would Adam have form the beginning? He wouldn't have any chance because %99.99999 of the time the key would have gone down the drain before anyone could actually see it and get free.

It was adams test, and he passed. Now he'll get rewarded for it.
