In a nutshell (for our non-Canucks here), the reigning Liberal Government is in the midst of an advertising scandal whereby it has been shown that certain Liberals took kickbacks/bribes from Quebec advertising firms, ensuring that those firms got first dibs on juicy government contracts. There were bogus invoices, money paid for NO work, etc etc.

Corruption and general misuse of taxpayer money, basically. The Gomery Inquiry is getting to the bottom of the whole thing as we speak.

As for Martin's speech, it seemed heartfelt and I agree that an election shouldn't be called until after we know the Gomery findings. This probably won't happen since the opposition will probably force an election this summer.
