It's to show some effort in picking out a gift...."its the thought that counts" and all that bullshit....To be honest I couldn't care less, but I'm sure your girlfriend or some fuckin female would like it if you busted out a voucher for her birthday as opposed to dipping into your pocket and pulling out just cash, which demonstrates no thought at all.
It's hard to know how people react to that kind of stuff, so It's always easier to just play it safe and show some "effort."
